How should weight be distributed in a canoe?

Ideally, weight should be distributed so the canoe sits level (even trim) or very slightly stern-heavy. The heavier paddler usually sits in the stern for better steering control. Gear should be placed to balance the weight difference between paddlers. Keep heavy items low and centred for stability.

What happens if a canoe is bow-heavy?

A bow-heavy canoe digs in at the front, making it hard to turn and slow to paddle. It can also ship water over the bow in waves. In rivers, a bow-heavy trim can cause the bow to catch in current and spin sideways. Redistribute gear towards the stern to correct this.

How much gear can I carry in a canoe?
