Should I use a compression sack for my sleeping bag?

Compression sacks reduce volume by 30-50%, saving space in your pack. However, storing a sleeping bag long-term in a compression sack damages the insulation. At home, store sleeping bags loosely in a large cotton storage sack or hang them.

What compression ratio should I use?

Down sleeping bags compress to about 30-40% of their loft volume. Synthetic bags compress to about 50-60%. Clothing compresses to roughly 40-60% depending on material. Puffy down jackets compress very well (25-35%).

Are stuff sacks worth the weight?

For organisation and waterproofing, yes. Ultralight hikers often use a single pack liner instead of multiple stuff sacks. A good compromise is one waterproof stuff sack for your sleeping bag and a pack liner for everything else.
