Backpack Size Guide by Trip Type

Getting the right pack size is crucial. Too small and you'll be strapping gear to the outside; too large and the extra weight and bulk will slow you down. This guide covers the recommended volume ranges for every type of trip, from a quick day walk in the Peak District to a long-distance thru-hike.

Torso Length & Fitting Guide

Your torso length — not your height — determines your pack size. Measure from the C7 vertebra (the bony bump at the base of your neck) down to the top of your hip bones (iliac crest).

Height ranges are approximate. Always measure your torso for the most accurate fit. Many packs offer adjustable back systems.

Plan Your Pack

Volume ranges are general guidelines. Your actual needs depend on the bulk of your gear, the season, and personal packing style. Compressible down sleeping bags and ultralight shelters can significantly reduce the volume you need.
