What sleeping pad thickness do I need?

Side sleepers need at least 5cm (ideally 7.5cm+) to cushion hips and shoulders. Back sleepers can use thinner pads (3-5cm). For winter camping, thicker pads provide better insulation. Closed-cell foam pads are typically only 1.5-2cm thick but very durable and lightweight.

Should I get a regular or wide sleeping pad?

Standard pads are 51cm wide, suitable for most back sleepers. Side sleepers and restless sleepers benefit from 58cm or 64cm wide pads to prevent rolling off. Wide pads add 100-200g of weight but significantly improve sleep quality for most people.

Inflatable vs foam sleeping pad?

Inflatable pads are more comfortable, warmer (higher R-value per weight), and pack smaller. Foam pads are lighter, cheaper, indestructible, and work as sit pads during the day. Many experienced hikers carry both — foam for insulation and backup, inflatable for comfort.

Do I need a full-length pad?

Most adults need a regular (183cm) pad. If you are under 165cm, a short pad (168cm) saves weight — use your pack under your feet. Over 190cm, get a long pad (196cm). Torso-length pads (120cm) are the ultralight option but sacrifice leg comfort.
