Weather Awareness and Outdoor Safety
Understanding weather conditions is critical for outdoor safety in the UK. Mountain weather can change rapidly, with temperatures dropping significantly with altitude (roughly 1°C per 150m of ascent) and wind speeds increasing on exposed ridges.
Wind chill is calculated using the North American and UK standard formula, which takes air temperature and wind speed to produce a "feels like" temperature. At 5°C with a 40 km/h wind, the wind chill drops to around -1°C — enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in prolonged exposure.
Lightning safety follows the 30-30 rule: if the time between flash and thunder is less than 30 seconds (about 10km), seek shelter immediately. Our lightning distance calculator uses the flash-to-bang method (sound travels at approximately 340 m/s) to calculate the distance of a lightning strike.
